Classic TTM Success: Barry Lyons

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Nov. 7, 2012.

Former New York Met's catcher Barry Lyons has responded to a through the mail autograph request in just 13 days.
Lyons debut with the Mets in 1986 and spent most of his days with the Mets as the back up catcher to the late MLB All-Star catcher Gary Carter.
Lyons also played with the Los Angeles Dodgers. California Angels, and Chicago White Sox.
Lyons was one of a group of Mets that received a belated World Series ring following the Mets 1986 victory.
Today Lyons resides in Biloxi, Mississippi, where he rode out Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
According to the Barry Lyons Wikipedia page, Lyons and his family lost their home and many things including his World Series ring.
Today, it is reported that Lyons is active in the community and with the ongoing rebuilding process and is pushing for the construction of a minor league baseball stadium.

Classic TTM Success: Carlton Fisk, Maybe Arrested While Mailing My Card

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Oct. 25, 2012.

It seems Major League Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk responded to my through the mail autograph request, and mailed my signed baseball card the same day he was found unconscious behind the wheel of his vehicle with an open bottle of vodka in a New Lennox, Ill, corn field.

USA Today reported the following out of the affidavit.

Police report paramedics were called to the scene and Fisk was awakened.
Fisk, agreed to go to the hospital but refused a blood alcohol test.

His car was impounded.
"Around 7:20 Monday night, (Oct. 22) we received a couple of calls about a vehicle in a field," Deputy Chief Bob Pawlisz told ESPNChicago.com . "When officers went over there, they found Mr. Fisk unconscious behind the wheel. He was transported to the local hospital and charged with a lane violation, driving under the influence and illegal transportation of alcohol. An open container of alcohol was found in the vehicle."
Fisk posted bond and was released after he was issued a citation. He is scheduled to appear in the Will County Courthouse on Nov. 29.
To get Fisk's autograph, a $40 donation is required which is given to the Cancer Support Center.

I choose to believe that my $40 went to the cancer support group and was not used to purchase the bottle of vodka.
The fact that my card is post marked the same day this incident occurred causes my imagination to run wild.
Did he sign a handful of cards, go drop them in a mailbox and then head to the liquor store?
Or did he sign cards while drinking then head to the mailbox?
Was my card signed by an intoxicated Carlton Fisk?

Classic TTM Success: Andy Pettitte

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Oct. 15, 2012.
It is thrilling to report a through the mail autograph success from New York Yankee pitcher Andy Pettitte.
The three-time All-Star has seen post-season action 14-times during his 17-year career and is currently a member of the Yankee squad battling the Detroit Tigers for the right to play in the 2012 World Series.
Being a longtime Atlanta Braves fan and an-anti-Yankee fan, I used to find it hard to appreciate Pettitte.
He was a member of the 1996 Yankee squad that defeated the Braves in the World Series.
In 1999, Pettitte and the Yankees beat the Braves a second time in the World Series.
In 2005, Pettitte and the Houston Astros  defeated the Braves in the National League Division Series. The Astros went on the beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS but lost to the Chicago White Sox in the World Series.
In recent years I learned to soften my dislike of the Yankees and their core players of Pettitte, Roger Clemens, Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada  and Mariano Rivera, and Pettitte became one of my top fantasy players.
Pettitte is the first TTM success I have had from the Yankee's address.
In my opinion Pettitte has to be called a class act. Any player that will take the time to answer fan mail while his team is competing in the playoffs must truly care about the fans.
So hats off to Pettitte.

Classic TTM Success: Bert Blyleven

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Oct. 12, 2012.
Major League Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven will sign baseball cards through the mail and other items for a small fee with a portion of the proceeds going to the National Parkinson Foundation Minnesota.
Blyleven explains on his website that he got involved with the charity after Parkinson's affected his father.
Blyleven played 22 years in the majors, pitching for Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, PittsburghPirates, Cleveland Indians, and California Angels.
He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011.
He recorded 3,701 strike outs and 287 wins.
If you are seeking a major league autograph and desire to donate to a good cause, Blyleven's autograph may be a good choice.

Classic TTM Success: Eddie Perez

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Oct. 12, 2012.

Former Atlanta Braves catcher Eddie Perez has responded to a through the mail autograph request in just 536 days.

I sent the card to the Atlanta Braves address in April of 2011 and received the card on Oct.12, 2012.
The slow response sends hope that some of the other requests that I sent off nearly two years ago may return.
Before receiving Perez's signature, former Houston Astro Craig Reynolds had been the slowest to respond with a 303 day wait.
Perez was the backup catcher to Javy Lopez and later became the personal catcher for Greg Maddux.
He currently is a bullpen coach for the Braves.

My First and Second List of TTM Failures

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Oct. 9, 2012.

Classic TTM Success: Ron Blomberg

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Sept. 12, 2012.

Former New York Yankee Ron Blomberg

responds to through the mail autograph requests for a small fee.
Blomberg, known as Boomer, is noted as the first designated hitter in Major League Baseball and will sign a baseball card for $5.
I'm not sure but I believe the money is considered as a donation to the Isreal Cancer Research Fund.
Blomberg began his career with the Yankees in 1969.
After missing the 1977 season with a knee injury he joined the
Chicago White Sox. in 1978 for his final season.
He finished his career with 52 homer runs
He began a writing career in 2006 and published a biography and is reportedly working on a cookbook.

Classic TTM Success: Fernando Valenzuela

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Spet. 8, 2012.

Former Los Angeles Dodger pitcher Fernando Valenzuela has responded to a through the mail autograph request in just 15 days.
The Dodger star of the 80s made his debut in 1980 and helped the Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees  in the 1981 World Series.
Valenzuela and the Dodgers returned to the playoffs in 1983 and 1985 only to be defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies  and St. Louis Cardinals.
In 1996 Valenzuela joined the San Diego Padres  and went to the National League Division Series.
The Padres were defeated by the Cardinals.
I remember when Valenzuela was the talk of baseball his rookie season.
In 1982 I purchased a pack of Fleer Baseball cards and pulled card number 636, the Valenzuela Strike Out King Card.
I thought I would be rich one day. Today, the card can be purchased on the Internet for $2.95.
Never the less, when I started this hobby, I doubted I could get a Valenzuela autograph, but I saw on fanmail.biz that Valenzuela was signing and took a chance, mailed the Dodgers, and received a great autograph.

Classic TTM Success: Cris Carpenter

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on March 14, 2011.

Former St. Louis  pitcher Cris Carpenter and current Gainesville High School social studies teacher has responded to a through the mail autograph request in nine days.
Carpenter pitched for the Cardinals 1988 through 1992 before going on to pitch for the Flordia Marlins, Texas Rangers  and Milwaukee Brewers.
Carpenter is often confused with the current Cardinal pitcher Chris Carpenter  who joined the team in 2003 and is signed through 2013.
There is also a Chris Carpenter who debuted with the Chicago Cubs  and now pitches with the Boston Red Sox.
The Cris Carpenter, who signed my 1992 Topps card, had an eight year career in the majors.
He pitched in 291 games, striking out 252 and completing one game.
Carpenter made 30 plate appearances and managed eight hits and two runs scored.
Although his career numbers may not be memorable, the fact that he is signing cards through the mail is making many fans happy.

Classic TTM Success: Willie Wilson

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Aug. 20, 2012.

For those looking for a quick autograph response through the mail, send a request to former Kansas City Royal outfielder Willie Wilson.

Wilson, who also played for the Oakland As and Chicago Cubs, will oblige fans and signs sports memorabilia through the mail for a fee.
I sent Wilson $20 and a Topps 89 baseball card on Aug. 13 and the card arrived back in mailbox signed on Aug. 18.
The five day mail transaction is second only to former Philadelphia Phillie Kevin Gross Kevin Gross who responded to my autograph request in four days.
The fees sent to Wilson are recorded as a donation to the The Willie Wilson Baseball Foundation located in Kansas City, Mo.
The foundation focuses on assisting youth in learning the sport of baseball.
on the foundation's website Wilson has the following quote posted "I was fortunate enough to have baseball teach me the values relative to success. The sport gifted me with leadership and team building skills that translate in a relatable way in the world."
Wilson also sponsors a legends' game.
This year proceeds benefited spinal cord injuries and Project Walk of Kansas City.
Those that took part in the game included Danny Jackson, Dennis Leonard, Frank White, and Daryl Motley.
Wilson signed my card with a blue Sharpie and added the number six, which he wore with the Royals in 1978 through 1990.
Wilson played in the World Series with the Royals two times and played in the 1992 American League Championship game with the As.
Of the players that I have sent requests too that require a fee, Wilson's five day response is the quickest.
Andre Dawson was a 13 day wait; Jim Eisenreich was a 215 day wait and Nolan Ryan, 225 day wait.

Classic TTM Success: Steve Garvey

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Aug. 19, 2012.

Former Los Angeles Dodger and San Diego Padre Steve Garvey is now on my list of through the mail autograph successes.
Garvey is both the slowest response and the second quickest player to respond to my request.

How is that possible you ask?
Well I first mailed a card to Garvey on Sept. 11, 2010 to a talent agency in Los Angeles.
The agency was listed as the place to mail autograph requests to Garvey and others.
Well two years later no response or return to sender.
Then I saw on http://www.fanmail.biz/ that Garvey was responding to autograph requests at his home address.
So on Aug. 8
I sent a 1982 Donruss Diamond King card to Garvey explaining that I had mailed him at the agency two years ago and that there had been no response.

Six days later, or 702 days from my first attempt, I received my Diamond King back signed by "Mr. Clean."
Though I'm disappointed that there seems to be a card possibly sitting in a talent agency somewhere that may never make it back to me.
However, it is thrilling that Garvey is responding to fans through the mail.
For those not familiar with Garvey, he began his career with the Dodgers in 1969.
He played in four World Series with the Dodgers and one with the Padres.
He is a 10-time All Star and winner of four Gold Gloves.
Today Garvey is a motivational speaker and a member of the Baseball Assistance Team.

How to Get a Nolan Ryan Autograph

I started collecting MLB autographs through the mail in 2010. I posted my stories on a content mill that is now shutting down. So in order to keep a record of my successes, it is time to move them to my blog. Here is what I published on Oct. 7, 2011.
The Largest Online Trading Card Marketplace

Baseball Football Basketball Golf Hockey Racing Soccer

It has taken 225 days and $35 but finally the reward has arrived.
A Nolan Ryan authentic autograph is what I'm speaking of.
How did I achieve this you ask? Well it is simple.
First choose the item you want signed.
In my case I chose a 1988 Topps Baseball Card. One that I had many copies of that is valued anywhere from 50 cents to a $1.
Then I logged onto www.nolanryanfoundation.org
For a donation to the charity, Ryan will sign personal items. To request a baseball card or something smaller than a 5x7 such as a photo or game ticket, the cost is $35.
Items larger than a 5x7 is a $55 donation, a baseball cap or glove is $80 and a bat or jersey is $105.
To have Ryan add a personalized stat such as 324 wins or HOF '99, its an extra $18 charge.
After making your decision, send a check and the item and wait.
I mailed my request in February. My check was cashed in May and the card arrived on Sept. 24.
With the card is a letter of thanks from The Nolan Ryan Foundation, a cash register receipt showing the date my check was cashed.
On the back of the card, a hologram has been placed as proof of authenticity.

Raising awareness about Lymphangioleiomyomatosis

On March 25, 2014 I was diagnosed with a rare killer lung disease called Lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

I heard the word Lymphangioleiomyomatosis for the first time on March 25, 2013 when my doctor uttered the phrase "You have Pulmonary Lymphangioleiomyomatosis."

My world became an emotional roller coaster. It all started on Feb. 25, 2013 when I was admitted to the hospital with a collapsed lung.

Five days after being discharged I was admitted again with the same condition. My doctor had me undergo a CT Scan which showed I had cysts on my lungs. I have never smoked a day in my life.

A lung biopsy was performed and talcum powder was placed in my lung in an effort to prevent further collapses. The biopsy was sent to the Mayo Clinic and the diagnosis that is changing my life was sent back to me.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis, LAM, is a disease that slowly kills the lungs. According to the information my doctor gave me only about 1,300 people have it in the United States. The LAM Foundation explains that the disease usually strikes women in their 30s and the diagnoses usually comes in their 40s, if at all.

For the last six years or so I battled bronchitis nearly every year. Now I know it could have been because of LAM. My doctor says in 10 years I could need a double lung transplant unless some miracle cure or drug is created.

After suffering an emotional break down, I went out and bought a new Mustang. Then I had a few normal days, then my doctor called and said I would have to travel to Denver, Colorado for treatment.

That sent me back into an emotional crisis as the feelings of anger and frustration overwhelmed me. The next day I called the LAM Foundation in Cincinnati, Ohio and spoke with then executive director Sally Lamb.

Their website is www.thelamfoundation.org/

She told me there are women who have lived with the disease with out the aid of oxygen and lung transplants. However, bottom line is donations are needed so more research can take place.

Lamb has since left the foundation and Sue Sherman is in charge now.

At the time I composed this article I still couldn’t wrap my mind around the fact that this happened to me.

I was trying to come to terms with the fact that I must help raise awareness for this disease and beg people to donate to the foundation so that research efforts can continue.

I didn’t know what my physical or financial future was, still don’t as really no one does.

Living with LAM has been frustrating, sad, frightening and I feared the worst was to come.

I spoke to the hospital in Denver and found the situation frustrating and time consuming. I was told I would be there for 5-10 days talking to people. I called the treatment center in Dallas, Texas and was told if I go there, it would be a one day ordeal.

So I went to Dallas. Had a wreck and a death in the family while gone.

The only bright side was a good visit with Dr. Carlos Girod.

He was very nice and not frightening.

He delivered good news that my lung function is still good.

My goal is to keep it that way.

Since the June 2, 2013 visit. I completed a 5k in an hour and 15 minutes and successfully defeated a virus that makes your throat hurt for three days, steals your voice and then curses you with coughing and sinus issues, with out the aid of prescription meds or hospitalization.

I have organized two successful T-shirt fundraisers and two local fundraiser.

The events generated $1,400 for the LAM Foundation.

I have added pine oil capsules, raw honey and cinnamon to the diet and continue to research possible diet supplements.

So far I have been lucky. I read stories on Facebook of others who are chained to oxygen machines, many have never smoked. Like all disease, it makes many ask, Why me? Especially those like me who have never smoked.

So that is my story and the chapters I hope to add to it is continued wellness, research and one day a cure.

Some do not respond to TTM requests

It is time to classify some autograph requests mailed in 2012 as failures.

On Sept. 4, 2012 I mailed a  TTM request to former Milwaukee Brewer Jim Gantner. I mailed the card to the Brewer’s address after seeing some fans record success.
There is no success recorded for Gantner on http://www.sportscardforum.com/forum.php?referrerid=72224 so it is time to call this one lost.

Also, on that day I mailed a card to former NFL kicker Luis Aguiar.
I used an address in Waterloo, Iowa.
So far no luck and there is no success posted for Aguiar.

On Sept. 20, 2012, I sent a request to Wally Backman to the Buffalo Bison’s address where he was manager at the time.
It seems he was managing and not signing autographs as myself and others have no success to report.

Ron Stone is also on my failure list. He didn’t respond to a request sent to an address in California, but he is now responding from an address in Oregon.
Time to try Stone again.

On Oct. 9, 2012 I tried another former NFL player. I mailed a card to Steve Lombardozzi to an address in Maryland.

Like the others, it has not came back.
These are just a handful of players who have not responded. So far my success does out weigh the failures.
