It has been a good week at the mailbox as autographs from Bruce Benedict, Ricky Jordan and Rick Reuschel, and Pete Incavigla arrived.
I sent the former Texas Ranger a card on Sept. 11 and wasn't sure I would get a response after I found a posting from another autograph hunter announcing bad luck.
But after 54 days, my card has arrived. "Thanks Inky."
I mailed the other three former Major Leaguers on the same day.
Responses from Benedict and Jordan were postmarked four days later, arriving back in my mailbox six days after my trip to the mailbox.
Reuschel's autograph card arrived the next day.
Benedict is one of my favorite all time Atlanta Braves.
I started watching the Braves at the ripe old age of 11 or so and Benedict was the catcher and was referred to as Eggs, (of course for Eggs Benedict). He played all 12 years of his career with the Braves and was a two-time All Star.
He was one of many former Braves present this year at Bobby Cox Day in Atlanta.
Today Benedict is a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals and he runs The Bruce Benedict Baseball Academy in Dunwoody, Georgia.
Jordan debut with the Phillies in 1988 and stayed there until 1994.
He missed the 1995 season and then played 15 games with the Seattle Mariners in 1996 before retiring.
He played in the 1993 World Series.
Reuschel began his career with the Chicago Cubs in 1972.
In 1981 he played with the Cubs and the New York Yankees. He went back to the Cubs in 1983 and in 1985 went to the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1987 he played for the San Francisco Giants until the end of his career in 1991.
During his career, Reuschel pitched in the 1981 World Series for the Yankees and in the 1989 World Series for the Giants. If you are a sports fan and haven't tried seeking autographs through the mail yet, you are missing out.
So far I have only had three confirmed failures.
A refusal from Bob Horner and two return to sender from Craig Paquette and Jody Davis.
